Institutions in Delusion Opening Scene

Institutions in Delusion Opening Scene
The publishing company we chose was 'Film4' because they were most commonly associated with the type of movie we were creating.

Furthermore Film4 also supports many British and Indie film producers and so fit well with our production company 'Blue Lion Productions'. This further supports our choosing of Film4 for the publishing company as their support for both British Indie and psychological dramas means that they would be the most likely people to publish the film.

This title order was based off the movie Fight Club, which is a similar genre to the movie that we created and so we agreed that basing the titles off a similar style as that movie was a good choice. However we decided on some changes to the titles so that they could fit around what was happening on screen as the Fight Club opening scene is a stop motion in time while we have live action going on throughout the opening scene. This means that the titles need to be adapted to meet these differences and make sure that it fit in with was was going on on the screen. However, it is still true to its roots with the white text and easy to read font that shares a remarkable semblance with that of Fight Club.

Film Pitch Evaluation

Evaluation

When we pitched our film to the class, the students all had sheets which they had to give their constructive criticism and tell us what was good and what wasn't good about our film idea.

In hindsight, I feel that a lot of the responses were very positive, we didn't really have anyone slating our idea saying it is rubbish.

The first question to the mark sheet was:

What is the genre? Is this clear?
A lot of the results were very accurate but the responses were varied. The result which was most common was a thriller/mystery, I feel that this is due to the whole story being quite eerie and very odd. We also received
results such as 'Drama' and 'Psychological'.

Who is the target audience and why would they pay to see it?
Most of the results that we received stated that middle aged and cultured intellectuals will prefer to see this film. To be honest, this makes sense because this film will involve a lot of thinking. Also, a lot of the other responses were just simply anyone who is interested in films that make you think.

Does the mood and style fit?
The majority of the responses all explained how the dead man is shown which creates the intriguing enigma. I agree with this statement because that was our intentional idea in the first place, to create a nice amount of flowing enigma throughout the start of the opening scene.
One response which really caught my eye stated "Mood with rain and pathetic fallacy is a good idea" because this shows that they reflect the attitude of the scene. For example, it is stereotypical movies to have rain in sad/depressing scenes.
Lastly, some people said that the main character is clueless and selfish between life and death. This is interesting because the initial enigma created just from this presentation suggests that this character is resisting himself into going to life after death.
Narrative interesting? Enigma?
The responses show that the narrative is interesting. For example people said that the opening scene will be left on a cliffhanger. However, some people said that the narrative is minimal due to the character, "we don't know what will happen to him." But overall most people said that there is good elements of enigma. For example, people want to know how the character changes and develops.
The last thing which was mentioned was that the voice over is interesting, this is helpful to us because we wasn't sure whether this idea was good or not.

What films is it similar too?
A lot of people said this film was a very original idea, this will help us in sustaining our originality marks within the preliminary. The only thing that people said it was similar too was that it was quite similar to the 'Day i died' music video. Therefore, our advice was to make sure we do not make it look like a music video and keep with film.

Comments/Advice
Overall, a lot of people liked the credits idea and they said that is a good, original idea. On the other hand, a lot of people didn't know where we were going to film, so this meant we didn't explain where our locations will be. This is true because we didn't really mention where our locations will be purely because we haven't yet picked where we are going to film.
On a lighter note, mostly everyone said that this is going to be a very good film opening if we can pull it off. The reason why people said that is going to be hard to pull it off is purely because it is going to be very hard to compose. I feel that sound, body language and facial expressions are going to be crucial if we are going to compose to create a successful opening scene.  Here are example of reviews from our classmates, as you can see they spent a lot of detail into their feedback which we are very grateful of because we can use this feedback to create and improve our idea which should help us access the grades we all want.

Film Inspirations

Inspiration for our opening scene

When our group was deciding what to include in our opening scenes, these clips really helped us plan out how we were going to film and what shots we were going to include.

This opening scene scene is very good at showing how a camera focusses on a character is far in the background behind other characters. Secondly I like it how it chop and changes between each other which leads to a final climax which is similar to our film idea. The lead up of the music and the closer the characters get which leads to the final moment creates an anti climax because no one expected that to happen. We want to incorporate this idea/narrative into our film because this would fit into our pathetic fallacy of our main character who is living his daily life and gets caught up into the unexpected.
Secondly, we like the high angle shot at the end which gives the whole overview of the situation, we would like to include a scene like this because we feel it would be good at emphasising that he has no idea what is going on. In addition, this high angle shot could be a good scene to end our opening scene on because it could be a zooming out transition where we would end our opening scene.

Just Jack - "The day I died" from Sterntag Film on Vimeo.

The reason why I included this music video is because it runs along the same concept as our film idea. Our initial response to this music video is we like the idea of the middle aged man living his daily life. This runs in parallel to our idea because our film name is called 'middleman' so we thought if we used a middle aged actor such as a parent it would help portray the enigma more clearly.
Secondly, our group liked how this character is living his daily life as usual, oblivious to what was going to mess up his day. We gained some inspiration from this video because we plan to film our title sequences around air main character living his daily life and travelling to a location. The location will not be clear and the viewers will not be told where he is travelling too, this should produce some enigma because people would be wondering where the character is going.

In this opening scene, we liked the way how the character has headphones in, listening to music. This music is placed into the background of the overall opening scene. We thought we could incorporate this into our opening scene in the same concept. However, our character will not be popping off the dance movies just like Chris pratt demonstrated. Our character may have the odd bob of the head but that is it.

Delusion Makeup

Middleman Makeup

Above is the makeup which we are planning to do on the main character. Molly has only done this on one side of her face so that he can walk showing the other side of his face without the injury showing. This is meant to be where the character has skidded along the floor in the car accident. Molly created this look by using both dark red and light red lipstick to make a blood like colour. After Molly applied the lipstick, she put PVA glue over the top so that it would create a scabbed effect. I really like the way this looks and it does not give it away that there has been a very bad accident because it does not look too extreme.

Due to the scrapping of 'MiddleMan' opening scene, this script has become redundant however it still shows excellent skills being used by the Writer.

Prop List

Prop list

Prop list

This is the prop list, however some of the props were changed to fit both, what was available and the main character dress. We believed that the briefcase should be changed out for a handbag as it would fit the 'female businesswomen' role. Furthermore we removed the headphones as we believed that it would take to much focus off the opening scene and the story being told along with it. Finally, the watch was not included as it was not available on the day of filming and so we decided not to use it. Adding on to this, it might also break the character as if the watch was not 'feminine' then it would not fit the businesswomen role well.

How the opening fits with research of codes/conventions, genre and audience

How the opening fits with research of codes/conventions, genre and audience

Our planned opening fits much of our research as the idea we had to begin with was created from these ideas.

To begin with, the opening scene fits conventions as road accidents are one of the most common forms of deaths that people will experience and it is possible that many people have experienced the danger of death. This means that we will be able to hold the audiences suspension of disbelief as it is more believable that the story would start like this. Also, we wanted to convey that this could happen to anybody as this would appeal to our audience of the middle aged as they may have experienced death at some point in their lives and so would be more empathetic towards the main character and the movie in general.

Furthermore, it fits the genre of mystery as it thrusts the audience into a scenario where the main character does not know how they died and must attempt to discover both how they died and more about themselves later on in the movie. The audience is along with this journey, following the mystery genre, appealing to anybody with an interest in it. Also, this is not the only genre involved as it also has a philosophical theme and speculative genre as the idea of a man still able to consciously exist after death is retorted by modern science and commonly not accepted. This means that the opening scene also follows these genre types.

However, as I previously mentioned, following these different genre types means that the movie becomes more accessible to a wider audience. These primarily include middle aged and intellectual thinkers of all ages that are interested in the life after death and life's 'What-ifs' as this is what our movie observes and attempts to portray. On the other hand the audience also opens itself to a much larger audience as the idea of death interests most people as most have experienced it in some form or another and allows them to contemplate what might happen after the event.

Outfit Ideas

Music Ideas

Music ideas - Middle Man

Music ideas for our film opening.

In today's lesson I did research on the music we are going to have in the background of our film opening. We as a team have decided to have instrumental music in the background to add effect on our film opening, the reason we have chosen not to have music with lyrics is because the audience may become slightly distracted of what is being said in the music instead of what is happening in the film opening. We also choose to have instrumental music because it fits the genre of our film which is a drama, so therefore it needs to be contemporary.

This is a video that i found that has similar music that we want ours to be similar too.

This is the music that we have decided to use however as we believed it better fit in with the theme of the movie and also that the beginning of the song could be included in the walking scenes as it was the 'almost-perfect music' as it could be placed under the video as audio which could be heard but was not prevalent to the audience but did provide ambience to the shots.

Represenatation

Representation In Delusion

The whole concept of our film is that these disasters can happen to anyone and these events are unexpected by the majority. We have picked a businesswomen with an unidentified age but obviously around young adult because we want to feature a character which suits the targets audience. A lot of our target audience will be based around cultured intellectuals and the general middle aged population. This is because this target audience would be more in touch with these experiences from events with loved ones and family members. This would make our audience more engaged.

Fight Club Title Sequence analysis

Delusion- Audience

Audience
Primary Audience
The primary audience of the movie is the middle aged and intellectual thinkers of all ages as the basis for the story is morbid and questions life after death and so requires thought around the subject. This is why this is the primary audience as these people are experienced with not only life but have most likely come across death throughout their lives and so will be able to connect with the main character. Furthermore, intellectual thinkers will be able to understand the aspects of the movie and the meanings and motives behind why the main character is still alive.

Secondary Audience
The secondary audience is focused on the main film going audience of people aged between 16 and 24 as this is the largest audience that is likely to attend the film merely to see the film and is an audience that does not require any specializations as it encompasses such a large amount of people. Furthermore, due to the younger ages present, it may interest them as the topic of death may be something that they are uncommon or inexperienced in and so it will act as an introduction to the topic with the themes of the movie.

Production Diary

Production Diary
 10/11/15
Day 1 10/11/15: On the first day we were assigned our groups and had a short introduction session, telling each other a brief overview of ourselves and the ideas that we had for our movies. We all introduced an idea separately and then discussed what we thought was good and bad about all the ideas and started to consider which one we would pick. We came down too two separate ideas but where then stuck as of which one too chose as we all thought that the ideas were both good. At the end o the lesson, we left considering a movie and keeping one o the ideas as a back-up.

Day 2 11/11/15: Continuing on from the first day, we started taking bigger considerations for the first idea 'Life' and planning out what would happen in the movie while creating the film pitch presentation. However, we began running into problems with the idea and so took the initiative of presenting the pitches in front of a critical audience to have them decide whether or not the back-up idea 'MiddleMan' was as good or better than the 'Life' idea. We began creating alternate presentations for the ideas in preparation for presenting them.

Day 3 12/11/15:On Day 3, we presented the separate ideas and had the audience vote on the what they thought would be the better of the two to watch. The audience decided that 'MiddleMan' had the better enigma created and was also a more original idea. As a group, we then decided that we would use the back-up instead.

Day 4 13/11/15: We began by planning out the basics of the opening scene and plotting what would happen in it. We also began planning out actors that would play roles in the opening scene, considering what kind of audience we were targeting and how to make the scene look natural in the normal world.

Day 5 16/11/15: We finished the basis for the storyboard while continuing on from the previous session. We had to overcome the issue of ending it without making it seem like a trailer however we believe that we have overcome this efficiently and effectively. Furthermore, we forward planned for our roles, deciding who was going to do what role and beginning our designated tasks. We also began creating the moodboard.

Day 6 17/11/15: On this day, we began to create the script for the opening scene, using the storyboard that we created as an influence for the timings and the actions that he would do. We also finished our target audience so that we had a good idea of who to appeal to with our marketing and script and choose what would fit well and what we could add as extras to the opening scene to further enhance the experience for that audience. The moodboard was also enhanced and improved further by fleshing out various key aspects like character, scenes, settings, films. We also began exploring the representations present in the opening scene including the fact that the general working man was stereotyped as the main character.

Day 7 18/11/15: On Day 7, we recorded our storyboard and began the editing process to piece it together. We also created our risk assessment, covering what could happen during filming. Costume and make-up design was also covered on this day as we planned out what the main character and extras would wear. We also began research for the location of shooting. The prop list was also completed stating items we would need and online stores that we can purchase them from.

Day 8 20/11/15: We began researching music ideas on this day to attempt to find the right music for both the main character to listen to and too play in the background. Furthermore we re-recorded our storyboard due to an issue with a member not being present who had the previous audio clips. The conventions, genre and audience were also linked to the opening scene and analysed how they fit together.

Day 9 23/11/15: Today we checked over the script for the opening scene and created the 'dialogue' scene for the main character as well as starting the movie's poster design for the marketing campaign. Furthermore we also continued the music research for the opening scene.

Day 10 24/11/15: On this day we evaluated our storyboard and also tested shots for actual filming as too train ourselves in different techniques and to see what worked and what didn't. Furthermore we also continued editing together our recorded storyboard against the images and completed it on this day.

Day 11 25/11/15: We began filming on this day and were able to get many shots required for including the titles. Many of the shots we got were 'filler' shots and will most likely not be used in the final cut of the opening scene. We did this to make sure that we had plenty of good shots for the opening scene and that we could pick and choose during the editing process. Furthermore we also did the interviews for use on the website that we also began to create for the marketing campaign.

Day 12 26/11/15: On day 12, we began the editing process for the shots that we collected, attempting to link them together in a correlated style that made sense. We also began adding the titles into the shots we had. The movie poster was also enhanced, using the actual actor as the main focus of it to make it more realistic to an actual movie poster.

Day 13 27/11/15: Today we rethought our project and changed our plan, scrapping our original footage and decided to re-film everything using a different actor but very similar storyboard and basic layout of what happens in the opening scene. We began planning out what would happen in the new opening scene on this day as well.

Day 14 30/11/15: We continued planning out the shot list and locations on this day as well as discussing the extra changes that had to be made to make the opening scene filming work and that the day of filming would run smoothly and that we could gain all the shots we needed so that we did not have to return when conditions were not similar or optimal.

Day 15 1/12/15: On this day, we filmed our 2nd draft of the opening scene, spending the entire day collecting footage for the editing process to attempt to create a better opening scene than the first draft. Once we were finished we then correlated our footage together and decided what footage to use and what to scrap.

Day 16 2/12/15: Today we began the editing process with the footage we had decided to use and put it into the editing software. We cut and cropped footage together to make the footage look more like an actual opening scene and also added in titles to some of the shots although it was mostly experimentation at this point. We also began writing the script for the internal monologue scene.

Day 17 4/12/15: We recorded and added in the internal monologue into the first draft today to complete the edit for the first draft. We also continued adding titles on this day, experimenting with different effects to have them come in. We also began updating the 'paperwork' of the project to make it fit the change in the movie idea.

Day 18 7/12/15: Today, we provided, and were provided responses from our peers to assist us in creating our movie and how to improve it later on.

Day 19 8/12/15: We continued providing feedback today and continued the editing process to respond to the recommendations given so far by the feedback provided. Some members also continued providing helpful assistance to other groups.

Day 20 9/12/15: In continued response to feedback, on this day we filmed once again in an attempt to get more 'filler' footage as well as more close-up shots to make the opening scene better and shorten scenes by splitting it up. This went well as we were able to collect all the footage that we wanted to get. We then uploaded the footage and began editing the footage into the 2nd draft.

Day 21 10/12/15: On this day we continued the editing process of the opening scene, adding in the new footage to the older footage.

Day 22 11/12/15: Work continued on the editing process on this day, with a focus being placed upon the audio aspects. We attempted to smooth out the audio transitions throughout the opening scene to make sure that it did not ruin the immersion of the audience.

Day 23 14/12/15: We spent this day smoothing out the opening scene, attempting to remove any defects from the movie and trying to get it to as close to perfection as possible. We then uploaded the movie to be ready to be viewed.

Day 24 15/12/15: After finishing our editing, we continued to update the paperwork related to the opening scene to make sure that the opening scene was supported and evidence was shown of our work to complete it.

Day 25 16/12/15: On this day, we continued to update the paperwork related to the movie as well as provide peer assessment to each other about our individual blogs.

Day 26 04/01/16: Today we started our evaluations, assigning questions to each group member and beginning to decide how we would present each question in an imaginative and innovative way.

Day 27 05/01/16: We continued answering the evaluation questions today- providing assistance to each other throughout by offering ideas and help in how to present/ write up the answers.

Day 28 06/01/16: On this day we continued to answer the questions.

Day 29 07/01/16: On this day we continued to answer the questions.

Day 30 08/01/16: On this day we continued to answer the questions.

Roses are Red

Excellent presentation of titles throughout with unique camera angles using mise-en-scene. However some scenes were slightly blurry or hard to read like the 'computer screen' scene that had the 'music' title.

Music and editing fit well to the romance theme of the opening scene but music did feel like it went on for a little too long.

Genre of the movie is unclear but definable if the pretenses are seen like the hearts and the photos on the mirror. But I had no feel for what would happen during the movie.

Blitz

Many props used that fit the setting of the scene and set the tone of the setting of the movie. Use of red brick is very effective along with the '1940's' themed posters and radio assisting.

The music fit well to the setting as it was not 'over-the-top' but also set the atmosphere well. The sounds included as well, especially early on in the form of creaks and distant explosions where amazingly executed as well and helped further set an atmosphere.

Mise-En-Scene was good with the slow reveal of the girl near the end helping supplement the horror genre.

Lastly the enigmas created were effective at holding the audience's attention and making them want more.

Luna

To start with the opening scene was brilliant and executed well with the match-on-action shots fitting well and the music playing alongside it reflecting the romance genre.

The Mise-En-Scene was also good and the editing was perfectly timed as the music fit transitions and actions that were happening on camera very well, attracting the audience.

However the narration at the start lets it down as the sound quality is below average of the rest of the opening and it feels as though it is too badly paced as an opening scene.

Furthermore the lack of originality throughout the opening is a let down as nothing new is truly introduced when compared to '500 days of Summer'. The rewind is also sub-par to the rest of the video with it feeling to forced to be in-place.

Mother and I

The titles introduced at the start were non-intuitive and simple to the point of boredom with only simple effects added to them like the blood effects.

Furthermore, this 'boredom' almost extends to the rest of the opening scene until the very with just the son walking around the house. However the shots used were very effective and well-executed with MIse-En-Scene being good.

The enigmas created as well were good enough to keep an audience captivated as the story is introduced well to the audience.

The use of different age groups assists with the plot of the story and shows good initiative by the director as it helps immerse the audience.
